Blogging=Cable Access Show

The blog Lelo in Nopo asks the difficult question, "Is having a blog like having a cable access show?"

If having a blog is like being a local cable access T.V. star, I would like to use these folks as guide for new bloggers and rising late night cable personalities:

Auntie Marialani :(a fictional character you may say, so what?)

RonBo: Oceanic Cable Access aerobic workout instructor and martial arts master, philosopher, and provider of commentary on life's foibles.

Bu La'ia: If you don't know, no ask.

Bruddah Sam and Lina Girl: So what? You hungry?

Follow these examples dear writers, and give the Internet a fat lip.

Oddly enough, I took this before I read the local Hawaii news this morning. =(

Now That's Low

Still listening to ObZen. I spotted this:

Bleed

Currently listening to Meshuggah as loud as my little laptop speakers can possibly go.

Bleed

Meshuggah is currently playing at the Roseland in Portland.

One More for March 29th

Happy Anniversary!

Biblical Weather.

It snowed again in Yamhill. Then, it rained. It snowed again, it rained some more. When i thought there was enough of a break in the weather to do some work, I suited up and headed for the paddock. Didn't see the hail and freezing rain coming. No sir. The sucky muck (or mucky suck) conditions made it near impossible to wheelbarrow around the paddock. I can take the hint; work time over. Time to ponder the questions of late lunch and the metaphysical.

I think it's time to get inside when you can hear your boots making mud suck sounds over your metal cranking iPod. I think.

Measure of Time.

Snow Day: Forward Operational Base Yamhill

Today being Thursday, I had to get up earlier than usual. It's garbage day. This means I need to haul the tupperware cup from hell (with wheels) to end of the driveway near the edge of the road. I was not prepared for what I saw out the window.

Snow

Being from Hawaii and all that, please forgive my display of enthusiasm. HOW UNBELIEVABLY COOL IS THAT? FLUFFY RAIN ICE FALLING FROM THE SKY! THE SKY! ME LIKE!

Needless to say I was amazed. It was surreal, it was beautiful, it was the experience I asked for. It's one of those things you can't buy. I am grateful, indeed.

Being a scientific kind of guy, I decided to compile a list of tasks to complete when the next flurry of sky ice comes my way:

1) Snow Angel
2) Snow Man ( Followed by Snow Woman, Snow Person of Color, and Transgendered Snow person)
3) SnowBalls and Snowball warfare
4) I have two dogs. MUSH!
5) Create pair of snowshoes from MacTarnahans empties and cardboard carriers
6) Write name in snow. There, I said it.
7) Find two snowflakes that are exactly alike. Claim right as heir to Kingdom.
8) Learn all the Eskimo words for Snow.
9)DO NOT. I REPEAT DO NOT EAT THE YELLOW SNOW
10) Find Enchanted Magicians' Silk Top Hat for item #2. Create animate snowy Golem/henchman. Terrorize Yamill County Folk.

Here's to more snow,

Aloha!

No Snow for You. Yes, you may have none.

It snowed in Portland. It snowed in deepest, darkest Yamhill. It did not, however, snow at the official Hawaiian Consulate in Yamhill. Some of the Internet weather services predict snow mixed with showers, while others have just predicted rain. I want the full Bing Crosby, Snow Angels, Bob Cratchit  experience. So close...so close.

Twiddla!

Twiddla is pretty nifty!

How long will it remain free, i wonder? Good work, guys!

Molokai News

Saw this the other day:

Molokai Ranch to close, lay off 120
Is this an instance of Kid loses game, takes ball and goes home? Too simplistic?

Another take on the story from the Honolulu Star Bulletin: Molokai Ranch to quit island

Quit island?! Good, leave the land for the people of Molokai. Too simplistic yet again? Comments?

A Ferrari from home

A Beautiful 808 F-Car from the Honolulu "Cars -n- Coffee". If you are a certain age, a Ferrari must have a 12 cylinder engine in the *FRONT*.  Me, not so picky.

Rock on Fellow Tifosi!  Aloha!

Aloha Kakahiaka.

Good morning from Yamhill, Oregon. The current temperature is 31°F with ground ice conditions. The forecast for today is the high at 56°F, low at 36°F (snicker, hahahah, snort, snicker...) partly cloudy.

Ducks in the sky, quacking. Is that my Koan moment ?

The plan was to go to see Buckethead at the Aladdin Theatre. Remember kids, Ticketmaster is your friend. We did not, i did not expect the greasy binge nubing shards to be  sold out.

Consolation prize ? Meshuggah is coming to the Roseland. No negotiations, this one is a done deal.

Although we didn't get to hear the small world stylings of my favorite guitar player that wears  bucket, i did enjoy the company of Ms. Ma'am and her impromptu tour of the PDX proper at night.

Dinner was enjoyed at Nuestra Cocina. Bueno! Have the spicy Margarita, it is a life changing experience. The food was fantastic, the open kitchen show outstanding.

The night ended at The Heathman, after a quick tour of Portland's living room.

It is now 35°F. Aloha Kakahiaka, from Yamhill, Oregon!

The chore list for today.

Here are my action items for forward operational base local-kine-freedom in Yamhill, Oregon.

1. Drink Coffee.
2. Make Breakfast.
3. Unload Several hundred pounds of rocks and wood chips into the paddock.
4. Dig hole in ground.

The previous occupant had placed a platform made entirely out of wood at the opening to one of the horse stalls. The wood has since deteriorated, making it very hazardous for the horses.  The platform appears to be constructed of wood not unlike railroad ties, with flooring that is at least 1, almost 2 inches thick. This is supported by a frame of said railroad ties, embedded into the soil.

Hooray! Hooray!  Hooray!

The task is to remove all traces of the platform and supports, and fill the void with rock and wood chips , etc. to provide a safer place for horse hooves and to have a happy wife.

This shouldn't take too long, i think.  After that, standard ranch chores, house work, and my work obligations.

Pics to follow. There is a musical cherry on this Sundae of a day, however.

Watts.

I like this article on Zen

"The dust comes from the Outside!"

Giant Yellow Ball In Sky Disappears, Goes Back To Hawaii!

41°F and Cloudy. Strange Aerial phenomenon discussed in previous entry has vanished from forward operational base. Intelligence sources have places giant yellow ball of light and heat in the air space over Oahu, Hawaii.

The phenomenon over Hawaii has pronounced effects on the residents. These include dermal color changes, time dilation, starch multiplication phenomenon, and peculiar dialect.

Good Morning, Yamhill. Aloha!

44 Degrees F. Pinot Wins...

Not only did the day start with a ball it ended with one as well! The neighbors kicked a ball into the very top of a mystery tree near the barn. It dawned on me that we are sorely lacking in implements of husbandry tech/nerdery. Noted. (add 1 very tall ladder as well for gutter, roof and barn+shed maintenance)

Giant Yellow Ball Of Light Fills Oregon Sky!

There is a big yellow ball of light in the sky this morning. Some of the effects of this strange aerial phenomena include and abundance of light and a strange sensation of warmth.

The morning started late today as I got to visit Queen St. and Kilihau virtually. DST, a snake filled with bitter herbs and spices...

Slainte!

I cooked this morning. Now I get to watch someone cook for me! Slainte and Aloha!

Sunday, March 16, 2008

Good Morning, Yamhill.

i am pretty sure that i got about three hours of sleep, maybe i should buy a book? Trying to read an article on objectivism on an iPhone is not the same a good old book. Ayn Rand? Didn't officer Barbrady pan that book? Should have bought a copy of "Dune" at HNL. Going this long without a book is pretty unbearable. Perhaps we can check out that place in Newberg.

While I'm here, WTF?

Hawaiian Barbecue?

I wonder if any of these people working tonight have ever been to Hawaii? Just saying. The food is still good. Inhaled a fruit punch- we had the white boxes of styrofoam goodness to go.

Congratulations are in order for Lewis Hamilton! While we cheer for Scuderia Ferrari around this part of Yamhill, that was some insane driving by the McLaren Mercedes piloti.

Let us bow our heads in prayer for Ferrari =(

1 Month and one day

One month and one day. In an hour it will be one month and two days. One 24 hour period after that will be one month and three days. The point ? None. It just is.

Above me i am hearing the constant commotion of cats. My theory is that the cats are trying to storm the office to gain control of the printer, thereby increasing any leverage of any future negotiations between the feline horde and the human occupants. Of course, the simple answer would be that the cat(s) are simply having the "crazies" and are just running around because they have to.

Simple is not always entertaining, unless you enjoy one note pianos.

One Month

One Month as of today. Where does the time go?

A Hui Hou!

Tuesday, March 11, 2008

Had a frozen pea thrown at you?

I decided to do work in the paddock before I started my computational activities. It started to rain. Then the wheelbarrow was making noises. tink.tink.

tink. tink.

TINK TINK-TINK-TINK!

Holy. Fucking. Cow.

i can't believe it, i'm getting hailed on. While it's pea sized balls of ice falling from the sky, the whole "Ten Commandments"
(starring Charlton Heston )scene does not get lost on me.

We're not in Hawaii any more Toto. We're not in Hawaii.

The Moon

Walking the dogs out by the paddock, i happen to look up at the night sky. A crescent moon, horns pointing upward, framed by two fir trees. While its not Hawaii, I will admit that this is a beautiful place.

In two days, it will be a month since I boarded HA flight HA26P. I was asked yesterday what i miss about Hawaii. My response?

The cultural diversity
The food. In particular, the Plate Lunch, and the Korean Plate Lunch.
The warmth. Did i really say that? Yes, i did.
The blue skies and the tradewinds.
Aloha Shirts. Yes, the business wear of the islands that i never adopted. How i miss ye!

Things I still need to get used to?

It's Cold. Really.
People are really friendly.
You gotta dress differently. Dear readers, Oregon is not Hawaii. Layers. Socks and SHOES!!!(gasp) in the house!
Come on guys, if it's an asian restaurant, Japanese, Thai, Chinese, what have you- please give it a name that doesn't insult
the culture. *amurai *ams? Yike.
From where i sit, everything is far away.
You know, i noticed there are no Hawaiian street names, go figure.

We're here for the long haul. While the road is bumpy, it's still the road to our future. Buckle up.

setenv and the tcsh variables of doom.

The title has nothing to do with the content of the posting.

No tradewinds observed at forward base of operations. Recon has shown that the inhabitants of the sector due west (Capra aegagrus hircus) have continued on a pattern of consumption of the sector. Further investigation is needed to determine if the two inhabitants have tried to circumvent the security of the perimeter.

Aloha!

The update for today

The update for today is that there is no update. It's raining, it's dark and it is cold.

Monday, March 3, 2008

Just so you have an idea.

You may have met me. To give you an idea of the level of homesickness I am feeling at the moment:

I could consider eating a Spam Musubi*

There, I said it. Am I proud? No. Ashamed? No. Confused? Answer cloudy, try again..

Maybe I should stop watching travel shows about Hawaii for a little bit.. maybe i should learn to absorb the culture and sights of my new adopted home. Could someone send a packet of hurricane mix and a box of kleenex? A menu from Shiros and an ewa beach snowglobe?

* I have not eaten, nor have i procured the materials to construct, a spam musubi *

I will say three things about this particular travel show.

Best. Episode. Ever.

Aloha and goodnight.
